"We are like prisoners... We do not have a life, only work."

"The idea that ‘without sweatshops workers would starve to death' is a lie that corporate bosses use to cover their guilt."

"We are like prisoners," one worker said.  "It seems like we live only to work.  We do not work to live.  We do not live a life, only work."

Another Human Ancestor Unearthed With Help From Google Earth

Amplifyd from googleblog.blogspot.com
Today, scientists announced a new hominid fossil discovery in the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site in South Africa. The discovery is one of the most significant palaeoanthropological discoveries in recent times, revealing at least two partial hominid skeletons in remarkable condition, dating to between 1.78 and 1.95 million years. We are especially excited because Google Earth played a role in its discovery.

I really needed another reason to hate Rogers

The only way Rogers was even vaguely workable was because we were able to max out their bandwidth cap at $100/mo. With Tek Savvy, I now get unlimited bandwidth for $50/mo, at least until Bell starts forcing them to do the same.

Rogers raises penalty for exceeding bandwidth cap

For anyone who’s approached or exceeded their monthly bandwidth cap with Rogers, take note because as of March 1 it could cost you quite a bit more for that bandwidth transgression than it used to.

I say “may” cost you more because while Rogers has increased the maximum penalty to $50 from $25 on all service plans, they’re dropped the per-gigabyte fee to $1.25 from $1.50.

As of March 1, that fee has changed and Rogers Extreme customers will pay $1.25 a gig up to $50 for going over the cap. That means the $60 month fee balloons into $110 if you ever hit 135 GB or more. (Here’s another Package chart but the new per-gig prices are not yet updated. However, it’ll give you an idea of overuse fees.)

The Sonic that never was

A project doomed by upper management from the start.

Amplifyd from lostlevels.org

It’s a series that ranks as one of the all-time greats, and rivaled the insane popularity of Mario and his stable of heroes at its height. Time and the 3D Revolution may not have been kind to Sonic the Hedgehog, but in the mid-90s, there was a brief, shining period when the new, 32-bit world lay before the franchise with incredible promise. This month Lost Levels will show you how that promise went horribly wrong, leaving a wake of disrupted careers, lost promise, and even physical illness. Join us for the strange tale that was Sonic X-treme for the Sega Saturn.

Acid Mothers Temple: Electric Heavyland

Some great japanoise streaming in full, or you could buy it!

Acid Mothers Temple: Electric Heavyland

Alien8 Recordings continues to invade different areas of psychedelia and is pleased to present the most groove-heavy release yet by Japan’s Acid Mothers Temple.
Electric Heavyland is one of the most over top releases to come out of the Temple so far, and is perhaps Kawabata Makoto’s heaviest groove-oriented material since the classic Mainliner debut, Mellow Out. The recording is made of three tracks that at times will have listeners reminiscing over the likes of early Mudhoney and Monster Magnet’s Spine of God era sound. It’s the one of the catchiest records from the incredibly prolific psych unit in recent times and can be best compared to the heavier tracks on Absolutely Freak Out Zap Your Mind or the bordering-on-metal sound the band often seems to take on in live situationsRead more at www.alien8recordings.com

The World Capital of Killing

The World Capital of Killing
BUKAVU, Congo
so far the brutal war here in eastern Congo has not only lasted longer than the Holocaust but also appears to have claimed more lives. A peer- reviewed study put the Congo war’s death toll at 5.4 million as of April 2007
What those numbers don’t capture is the way Congo has become the world capital of rape, torture and mutilation, in ways that sear survivors like Jeanne MukuninwaRead more at www.nytimes.com
